2025 Review / 2026 Plans

Here I am, the last day of 2025. 9:18am, wondering if I succeeded in accomplishing anything I wrote about at the beginning of the year.

I had physical goals that I wrote about on January 15th. I know my weight was creeping up to a region I wasn’t happy about. I don’t recall the weight I began the year at, or where I am now, but I know I feel a lot better than I did on 1/1/2025.

In 2024, I hit 14,753 minutes on Peloton tracking and my goal was to hit 15,000 in 2025. I did it! I knocked it out of the park with 17,345. So 2026 I’m shooting for 18,000+.

I also wrote about my 2025 Mental Health Goals. To be mindful, focus on self-care. I had good times and not so good with that. I am a worry wort. I worry about things I have no control over, and about things that are miles down the road. Waiting for that shoe to drop? That’s me! And I keep it all in, all bundled inside of me. Definitely need to work on my self-care in 2026.

Something I did achieve that wasn’t on my radar was working on my faith. I embraced my daily reading of “Jesus Calling” and its bible verses. I attended a Beth Moore workshop with my good friend and have plans for another this year. I took a big step in the fall and headed back to church, and went to confession for the first time in over 30 years. I feel whole and look forward to continuing to strengthen my relationship with God.

I still maintain a love/hate relationship with Social Media. My goal was to “read less what other people say and write more of what I want to say”. Did I succeed? Well, I wrote 90 posts which is 3 more than in 2024. Considering quite a few of the 2024 posts were Hump Day Photos, I think I did much better with writing in 2025. But I did not do better in my quest to lighten up on the social media sites! Recently, I set up a timer to block me when I’ve gone over my limit for the day. Some days I respect it, some days I ignore it. Still working on that.

I’ve already talked about some goals for 2026 here and here. Goals are great but if the habits to achieve them aren’t implemented, what good is it to set them? Here’s to working on those habits in 2026!

Grocery Shopping

We are blessed with a number of chain and family owned grocery stores to choose from for our groceries.

Because I handled the weekly shop for decades, I settled on our local Super Walmart. I like the way the aisles were set up and I created my shopping list to match their order. When they made changes, I made changes.

My husband, who took over the shopping a few years ago, prefers the smaller grocery stores. Family owned, but still large enough. Often though, something we buy on a regular basis will be out. For the longest time, the shelves for Quaker Oats were empty.

At times like that, I’ll make a list and head over to Walmart, because, as I tell him each time, “Walmart will have it!”. I continually try to get him to shop there, and one day we are going to a cost comparison as I’m convinced the prices are lower.

Which brings me to this morning. I had to get bloodwork done at 7:10am and I had to pick up some tea and almond butter so I figured I’d go to the grocery store afterwards.

I had a choice. Go to Walmart on my way home, or go next door to the chain supermarket. For Walmart, I’d have to drive, park, shop. For the other one, I would just have to walk to the connected building. I chose the one next door.

I walk in and look up at the aisle signs as I walk to the left. Tea…..Peanut butter…..tea….peanut butter. Nope.

I find an item directory at the beginning of an isle. Tea in aisle 8, peanut butter in aisle 25. I’m in aisle 4.

I look up at the sign for aisle 8 – cookies, crackers – ok what does that have to do with tea? Wouldn’t peanut butter fit better in that aisle? I walk to the end. There’s the tea across from the coffee.

I continue my walk to the other end of the store – past the drinks, cereals, cards, paper products – and I remembered why I don’t shop in this store anymore. The peanut butter and bread is all the way at the end of the store, in the farthest location from produce and any other food products. An aisle away from the health care items and across from dairy. It didn’t make sense when I shopped there, and it doesn’t make sense now.

I found the nut butter selections and I usually buy Barney Butter. None to be found. There were two Maratha options but the almond butter was crunchy and I wanted smooth with no salt or sugar added. I ended up with a large jar of Woodstock no salt added.

I headed to the self-check out with my items. I entered my phone number, but the machine couldn’t locate my account (I think it’s still active), but at this point I didn’t care! I swiped my items, paid my money, and left.

It would have been faster for me to drive to Walmart, park my car, hustle down to the two aisles for tea and almond butter, where I would have had my choice of even more than 2 options, pay, and head home.

Beginning is easy, Continuing is Hard

That is a Japanese Proverb and it is oh, so true. For me, at times, even the Beginning is hard.

I told my husband this morning that this week will be a week of working on new habits and re-starting habits that fell by the wayside over the year. I’ll determine what works, what I like, and what I don’t and carry that in to the new year.

Some of those habits include:

  • Reading my daily bible plan entry in the Bible app
  • Writing a morning journal entry from the Ordinary and Happy website
  • Morning time management. I don’t have to get to the office at 9am, but I like to because then I can focus on organizational tasks instead of routine tasks
  • Schedule at least one day off each week
  • When we get a text for a bike ride – do it! Even if it’s a Monday (payroll can be done up until 8pm EST)
  • Plan breakfast, lunch, and my workout the night before
  • Wind down for the night after dinner so when the 9pm alarm goes off to take my magnesium pill, I’m ready to head upstairs. I love time to read in bed!

Is that too much? There at times, especially at night when I’m watching a show, I’m like an obstinate child. the alarm goes off, I turn it off, continue watching, and forget to take my pill altogether!

Wish my luck and we’ll see what sticks!

Letting Go

I currently have 197 open tabs on my IPhone. I feel like that says something about me. Will I miss one of it’s gone? Will I even notice?

My IPad and laptop are not that bad. By the way, my IPad and phone are not synced. Not since I had a faulty password app and nearly lost ALL my passwords.

Anyway, my life has always been a little like that too. Keep stuff gathered around so I don’t forget them. Projects, papers, files…

If I put it away, if I close the tab, I might want it later and won’t be able to find it again. Sort of like that jacket you never wear so you give it to Goodwill and then you buy a pair of pants and realize the jacket would have been perfect for it!

Maybe December is the time to close those tabs, put those files and papers away and make a note of where they are. It’s time to tidy up for the new year.

Goals Are Good…

Unless you are obsessive like I can be about things like goals.

I downloaded an app called Streak because it was recommended by a (real life) friend whom I admire. I decided to try it because I want to focus on keeping myself mentally and physically active.

With Streak, you create goals and select how often they need to be completed. Multiple times a day, every day, a few times a week, and so on.

My goals were 5 20 oz water a day, 7,000 steps a day, write blog post every day, take vitamins every day, leave for the office by 9am, and post a picture to Facebook every day. Some are simple like the water and vitamins, and the Facebook post. Getting my steps in is a little more difficult because I work in a very small office. I incorporated walking around our complex during my lunchtime for a half hour. However, I still have to get additional steps in during the day to hit that 7,000. Leaving for work by 9 is a struggle! Writing every day is a struggle!

After a week, I changed the office time to getting there by 9:30, because honestly, I like my morning time at home and, since I’m the boss, I guess it’s ok to set my own hours. I changed the writing to 3 times a week because I needed time to research and write for my family blog.

I guess that represents growth within me that instead of saying “this isn’t going to work!”, I make some simple adjustments.

Mowing the Lawn

First it was the Roomba, now it’s the Automower.

We drove by a neighbor’s house this summer while he was watching his automower, mow his front yard. He sets a pattern and off it goes. Evidently, it can sense the end of the yard, but can you imagine, watching it get loose and go off down the street? At $2,000 for some, that would be a sad loss!

I live on just under a half an acre and it is all cut up into parts. Growing up, my sisters and I would mow the lawn pushing a little Lawn Boy machine. It was so light, that if I was in a hurry, I could power walk/run it over the lawn. Maybe not the greatest job, but I’m not sure anyone cared!

We had the front yard, near back yard, way back yard, tennis court, and under the maple trees, and that’s how we mowed. All of it was flat, except for a tricky part on the side of the house that headed down to the tennis court, which was not, but possibly was, as it was a large rectangle, great for games. The way back had an old patch of asparagus, that we mowed over. Under the maple tree section was barely any grass, a lot of dirt and sticks that would kick up and scare the sh*t out of me!

“Hey, I’ll do the way back today!” I liked mowing the lawn, putting my foot on the motor and pulling the cord to get it started. It was not even a self-propelled machine, just a straight up powered push mower.

After we moved back here, we’ve had a variety of mowers, self-propelled which I’ve used, but my husband prefers the riding mower which probably has a 0 degree radius for getting around the few trees left in the yard. We even had a lawn service for a few years, but I could do a better job with that old little LawnBoy mower!

Fri-yay!

I was so happy when I heard our weather forecaster mention the moon and Venus so close together this morning. I made sure to look up when I went outside.

I’ve been so good about NOT documenting my every trip outside but this morning brought me such joy

I love to capture the brilliance of the sunrise but the sun through the trees as it comes up is so special too. Many trees in our neighborhood are HUGE because they’ve been there in the 64 years I’ve been here.

I’m grateful for the trees and my neighborhood. It’s such a special place!

Digging In

If you are a reader here, you’ll see I can be “in my head” a lot.

I am reading a book entitled, “High Functioning” overcome your hidden depression and reclaim your joy by Dr. Judith Joseph.

I have told myself that I don’t fall into the perfectionist category and a lot of what she says about overworking was something I did in the past, but not now. However, by beating myself up mentally, I think I should be perfect, or strive to be perfect. Both in my work and my “being”.

She says it relates back to “trauma” most times childhood based, but not always. There can be trauma with a capital T or it can be lower case t.

What I’m more concerned about is that feeling of “blah”. Anhedonia – the reduced ability to experience joy in life which makes you feel meh or blah all the time. For me, I t’s a feeling of doing to get through the day and then the night. When did that start?

I have begun to explore how all this figures in my life. I can see why I am never (never ever) happy with my weight or shape.

I’m beginning to understand some thoughts and reactions in my marriage.

As my business coach says, “what gets measured, gets improved”.

I’m looking forward to digging in deeper.

Yard Work

I’ve talked about my yard before and the history of my home.

Over the last six months, my husband has been adding landscaping to all sides of the house. My father, not having grown up in a family without a home of their own said, “why do I want to plant something when I’ll have to take care of it”. Anything that grew wild, stayed wild and any spot with nothing, stayed that way.

We had discussed landscaping in the front of the house but I grew up with a father who didn’t plant anything remember? It all feels so permanent and “what if it looks bad, doesn’t grow, etc.”, is my school of thought.

Thankfully, my husband ignored me! We now have a variety of plants along the house including, azaleas, Joe-Pye Weed (fun name!) and Little Pye, Goldenrod, and Panicle Hydrangea. Most were purchased at our local nurseries and a few at Lowe’s.

My project this Labor Day weekend is to take pictures of, and lay out on paper, the plants and their locations. I (don’t think my husband cares) want to know what they are and what the colors are going to be. Some that have already bloomed, I forgot what they looked like!

I’m not going to go for perfection, just a sense of what we have!

I’m hoping that cooler and moister weather will green things up again!

If you were to look at your clock on this Saturday morning and it said 9:37 am, would your brain say, “ONLY 9:37 am yay!” Or “OMG already 9:37 am!” ?

I am in the camp of “OMG Already?!”, but I literally have nothing planned for the day, nothing to do except work out (heading there now), hit the Farmers Market (open til 1 or 2pm), read, and do some ancestry research.

I make myself crazy.
